Yet, the street remains a powerful symbol of political action, to ‘reclaim’ the streets is a strategy to insert oneself at the heart of public life. In 1968, the streets of Paris rocked to running battles between students and police – a protest against the emptiness and complacency of post-war society. In 1992, the acquittal of a number LAPD officers on the charge of beating black suspect Rodney King led to several days rioting in South and South Central LA – the worst riots that century. More peacefully the streets remains a focus for carnival, celebration and community – places for inclusiveness. For De Certeau, simply to walk city streets is to claim some kind of positive ownership, his idea of ‘pedestrian rhetoric’ describes the ways in which people move through the city claiming, and generating new meanings for spaces, altering their character through forms of movement, interaction and activity. While public spaces are increasingly constructed and maintained in the image of city authorities, developers and commercial interests, the public are never wholly passive or prescribed. For Steven Flusty public spaces are always ‘rife with cracks…. enabling a wide and eccentric range of unforeseen, unauthorized actions’, public spaces then, invite alternative actions. As long as space remains a contested concept - whether in Notting Hill or Bunker Hill - there are always opportunities for people to re-energize and re-humanize public spaces, making new and visible imprints on the urban landscape.
MON2T (text/plain, 94 KB) (generated with ascii pic) MON3T (text/plain, 276 KB) comment It's only a 2D thing but it could also be considered a megastructure. Not in a spatial way though. The Ascii reliefs work with letters and numbers. without a rational semantic concept. Theres just non-sense in the written Letters, only a visual graphic outline. Though, For me the essence of megastructure is somehow represented by these pictures.... Megastructures are multi-repetitive while a single element is not able to transport a meaning. But that takes us too far away from content again... However it's another way to deal with the surfaces, the opposite approach to using e.g. photos as textures. pointofview It's necessary to clear out my own point of view. What is my specific interest that can be used for a narrative in my work? The following quote points out the repetitive and discomforting quality architecture can sometimes have. But somehow I think that this is one of the major points which can be found in other (medial) forms, in terms of a critical approach- the repetitiveness of things that confines and isolates. Pp124: „Take Palladio’s Rotonda. You walk through one of ist axes, and as you cross the central space and reach its other side you find, instead of the hillside landscape, the steps of antoher villa Rotonda, and another and another. And another and another. The incessant repetition at first stimulates some strange desire, but soon becomes sadistic, impossible, violent. Such discomforting spatial devices can take any form: the white anechoic chambers of sensory deprivation, the formless spaces leading to psychological destructuring. Steep and dangerous staircases, those corridors cosciously made too narrow for crowds, introduce a radical shift from architecture as an object of contemplation to architecture as a perverse instrument of use." Taken from B. Tschumi: Violence of architecture:
Ok, I'm a beginner. Here's some evidence. There are just 3 or 4 textures in it, roughly modelled a balcony and repeated it a couple of times. There's no other than the default light or anything, most of the shadows are painted, textures are missing... etc.! I just try to get along with the technique. It looks flat and boring. Even not enough for simple game geometry i reckon. I need to do more variations or profiles for the floors. But its hard to extrude them from the Lobeda photos I made. The model needs depth and detail. All in all it took me a long time just to get along with where to click and stuff. It's a long way to build fine models and textures. I'm far away from that right now and it's kindof not very motivating to see things move so slow. The idea is still to create some massive repeating megastructures. Take my screenprints into the third dimension or something. Photorealistic is too far off for me, so I have to see how I can gain some nice results in another way. The 3d stuff should still be the source material for a 10 frame animation to use with a lenticular print. Maybe I shouldn't even try to use Photos as sources instead only orienting on geometrical and graphical shapes. |
